Choose Sizes

Sizes

When we first started making mudflaps, most mudguards were the full-length finishing below the level of the hub. Thin tyres meant most people had 35mm guards like the SKS Chromoplastics. Our standard size flaps were designed exactly for this.

Since then mudguards have generally become shorter and tyres and therefore guards have become wider and our range of sizes have evolved for the varying widths and lengths of guards as well as protection and aesthetic preferences.

We realise that this choice is overwhelming but at the same time we know that cyclists really like to dial things in and appreciate the options to get a good fit.

Popular Mudguard Recommendations

First, here are our recommendations for popular mudguards. Note that these are for the guards on typical bikes that we have observed but where these mudguards finish on the wheel is dependent on individual bike geometries and e.g. whether you attach a front mudguard in front or behind the fork crown.

Mudguard Front Flap Back Flap Notes
SKS Race Blades Standard Long Race Blade rear length is dependent on seat stay angle. Flatter seat stays lead to shorter guards. Long or Long Wide front as an alternative for extra protection.
SKS Race Blades XL Wide Long
SKS Chromoplastic 35mm Standard Standard Back Cone as alternative to have same shape front and back. Existing front flap removal required but front drilling tricky
SKS Bluemel 35mm Standard Standard Back Cone as alternative to have same shape front and back. Some models come with small rubber extensions, which should be removed.
SKS Chromoplastic 45mm Wide Wide Back Cone Wide as alternative to have same shape front and back. Existing front flap removal required but front drilling tricky
SKS Bluemel 45mm Wide Wide Back Cone Wideas alternative to have same shape front and back. Some models come with small rubber extensions, which should be removed.

We will be adding to this list over the winter...

Custom Sizing by Measurements

If your mudguards are not in the list you can choose based on your mudguards width and the distance to floor.

  1. For the width measure the mudguard width using a ruler (this will normally be the same as the width quoted on the product description)
  2. Then, measure the distance from the tip of the mudguard to the floor
  3. Finally use these tables to get our size recommendation for front and back sizes.
FRONT Distance to Ground
Mudguard Width <200mm 200mm - 320mm 320mm - 380mm 380mm+
Mudguard Width less than 35mm No Flap Needed Narrow (or Standard) Long A mudflap will likely stickout towards the feet and be ineffective.
35-45mm Standard (or Mega Flap) Long
45-55mm Wide (or Mega Flap) Long Wide
55-75mm Extra Wide (or Mega Flap) Long Wide
75mm+ XX Wide (or Mega Flap Wide) Back Mega Flap
BACK Distance to Ground
Mudguard Width <250mm 300mm - 350mm 350mm - 400mm 400mm - 450mm
Mudguard Width less than 35mm No Flap Needed or > 200mm consider front flap Narrow (or Standard, Cone) Long Extra Long
35-45mm Standard (or Cone) Long (or Cone Long) Extra Long
45-55mm Wide (or Cone Wide) Long (or Cone Long) Extra Long (or Mega Flap Long)
55-75mm Extra Wide (or Mega Flap) XX Wide (or Mega Flap) Mega Flap Long
75mm+ XX Wide (or Mega Flap) XX Wide (or Mega Flap) Mega Flap Long
